I don't get the word-twisting, didn't he say in a positive way that he will let Susan(alone?) go? I thought it was a two-terms bet, not a positive/negative action. Have I a language's comprehension problem?
@Sobriquet: He's letting Susan go... just as soon as Julian arrives. And Anna, of course, is just not being let go.
